Eric - Terry Pratchett ... he's not very good at it. All he wants is the usual three wishes: to be immortal, rule the world and have the most beautiful woman fall madly in love with him. The usual stuff. But what he gets is Rincewind, and Rincewind's Luggage into the bargain. Terry Pratchett's hilarious take on the Faust legend stars many of the Discworld's most popular characters in an outrageous adventure that will leave Eric wishing once more - this time, quite fervently, that he'd never been born...

... years ago with Brendan Fraser and Liz Hurley) – although Eric only gets 3 wishes not 7. The basic idea is the same though – the wishes are fulfilled, but being from a diabolical source the fulfilment of these wishes comes with a heavy price. Pratchett also takes a few pot shots at the Trojan War and assorted Greek mythology and the Aztecs for good measure. The book also features the inept wizard Rincewind and his amazing travelling Luggage. Rincewind once again feels that the universe is against him, especially when h...more

Crowned Review Eric - Terry Pratchett: When You Wish Upon A Star ... (1769 words)
by Nomad - written on 23/09/04 (Very useful, 132 readings)

It is a hot afternoon in late summer in Ankh Morpork and something is not right. The librarian at Unseen University (the Discworlds premier college of wizardry) can feel it and, when footsteps suddenly come out of nowhere and race across the floor accompanied by a distant scream, he can hear it as well. In fact all through the town strange things are happening. Usually it’s a fairly safe bet to blame the wizards for any strange events but this time they are not the cause. In order to find out just what is going on they summon Death who, of course, knows everything. Meanwhile Eric Thursley, the Discworlds most accomplished* demonologist, is ...

Eric is one of the earlier Discworld novels (8th in the sequence, in fact), and deals with the trials and tribulations of an adolescent Demonologist. He tries to perform a tricky demon-summoning rite and ends up with... well, not exactly a demon as such... For those uninitiated into the world of Discworld, it's Terry Pratchett's comedic fantasy fiction creation, inhabited by Wiazards, Witches, trolls, dwarves, zombies, and all manner of fantastical creatures. Oh and humans of course. The characters on the disc try to make sense of what's going on around them, managing (usually quite by accident) to actually do so on rare occasions. But the Disc, despite many ...

Premium Review Eric - Terry Pratchett: Cross out Faust! (768 words)

Eric was only the 2nd of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels to enter into my world; I came across the series entirely by accident and became unshakeably hooked on the magical world of olde timey fantasy he creates. Following my experience with "Mort" I simply had to get hold of more of Pratchett's books and, being published by Gollancz rather than Corgi, the usual publisher of his books and therefore a little cheaper, I bought Eric. The Plot: --------- For those of you that know Faust by Goethe, the story of a demonologist who gets a little more than he bargained for, you will not be surprised to find a lot of similarities in this ...
