The Burglar in the Closet - Lawrence Block

Premium Review Bernie's Coming Out! (781 words)
by samueltyler - written on 02/10/08 (Very useful, 89 readings)
Rating:

else can he hide if you happen to return early from the theatre; unless you have a roomy closet for him? Bernie Rhodenbarr returns in this the second of Lawrence Block s excellent mystery series. The life of a burglar is always about breaking the law, but there is a difference between stealing and killing, so how come Bernie always seems to get mixed up in murder? This time Bernie is an unfortunate witness to the killing of a woman whose home he was burglarising at the time; being locked in a cupboard though does not make him the best person to identify the killer. Not wanting to get involved in a case such as this would be a sensible thing, but the killer not only ...

The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling - Lawrence Block

Crowned Review To Catch a Thief (957 words)
by samueltyler - written on 22/11/06 (Very useful, 87 readings)
Rating:

how come I enjoyed the effortless charm of ‘The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling’? Burglar is the third of a long series of novels about Bernie Rhodenbarr by Lawrence Block. Written in 1979 it tells the continuing tales of a charismatic thief that steals for profit but somehow gets away with it. In this case Bernie has decided to set up a front as a book seller. When he is meant to be in bed he is instead robbing from the richer houses of the area. One day a customer comes in and ‘hires’ him to steal a rare work of poetry by Kipling. The initial robbery itself goes without a hitch and it is not until Bernie goes to claim his money that things turn bad. He is ...

Lawrence Block in general

Premium Review All around the Block (507 words)
by buttonman - written on 27/09/00 (Very useful, 27 readings)
Rating:

Lawrence Block is a New York based author who has a rich stable of characters each of whom are regularly revisited and expanded upon. The novels are all on a crime theme but different characters explore the myriad avenues of crime and retribution. My favourite character would be Matthew Scudder the alcoholic ex-cop come detective(played by Jeff Bridges in the movie "Eight million ways to die").Scudder has appeared in a dozen books and his cases involve murders ,kinappings extorsion etc. From what I've written nothing would appear to set Block apart from dozens of similar gumshoe writers. What is rewarding though is the character development and the genuinley sleazy feel ...
