Advantages: Written by Clancy
Disadvantages: Absolutely crap
This book is absolutely the last book I will ever read by Tom Clancy about Jack Ryan.I must point out that in the beginning I enjoyed reading Ryan's Cold War endeavours but now that he has become the goddamn President of the US the disbelief which I am all too ready to shelve has finally revolted against my authoritarian rule and is making itself heard. In the last book Jack Ryan had been on his way to Capitol Hill when the entire Congress and the President were wiped out by a Japenese kamikaze, shades of Pearl Harbour anyone?Anyway Jack is now President, even though he doesn't want to be-HA HA,and all the people who haven't encountered him are sure he is a pushover. Is he?Nope. If he was more an All-American Hero his mother would have been the Statue of Liberty. This book is diabolical.Clancy is so naieve about politics,e.g. Ryan tells people not to vote along party lines and in spite of 200 years of voting patterns they take the word of this unknown. In Debt of Honour you are willing to make exceptions for Clancy but this book is just bad. All the people who are on his side are all heroes, none quite as much as Jack obviously, and all his enemies are stereotypically evil.In fact I was just waiting for one of them to say something like "You only live twice,Mr. Ryan".In the end he bombs an opposition leader's house-this would never occur because other heads of state would then feel vulnerable. Also a nefarious Japanese threat is overcome by its own cunning. My God,will it end? My advice is don't buy this book(obviously,I hear you say;)).Buy some of his earlier books but not this.

ba_m_bi - 30/05/01 Most of his books are about politics but in previously in a more sideline role beside the espionage. It is this which I think detracts from the book. |
