Wilbur Smith is a good old-fashioned writer of adventure stories. Many of his books fall within a number of series. However, he has also written some stand-alone novels, of which this is one. The story, as with most of Smith's books, is set in Africa and, having been born and raised in Zambia, the author has a genuine knowledge and real feel for the African continent, which comes across very strongly in his books. The main character in this story is Harry Fletcher, a man with a murky past who is now going straight by renting out his sailing boat to anyone who wants to catch marlin off the coast of East Africa. Harry Bruce, the soldier, gets sick of the killing. He decides to do a simple robbery, get some cash and buy a boat. Sounds simple, but his partner takes off with the loot. He takes on another job, on his own, another simple robbery. He makes an error, alarms the guards, and the police. In the resulting shoot out, one of the guards gets wounded, and Harry never even took a gun, but still escapes alive. Feeling responsible he listens to the reports, longing the guard to survive. When he does Harry takes on a regular job. After two years he decides on another robbery, only with inside information, he takes his ideas to Manny Resnick, a man who can fund the project. This ...
