Advantages: Exciting story with no dull pages
Disadvantages: None
Wilbur Smith is a good old-fashioned writer of adventure stories. Many of his books fall within a number of series. However, he has also written some stand-alone novels, of which this is one.
The story, as with most of Smith's books, is set in Africa and, having been born and raised in Zambia, the author has a genuine knowledge and real feel for the African continent, which comes across very strongly in his books.
The main character in this story is Harry Fletcher, a man with a murky past who is now going straight by renting out his sailing boat to anyone who wants to catch marlin off the coast of East Africa. However, times are hard and Harry is forced by necessity to charter out his boat to some unsavoury characters and he soon finds himself in deep trouble.
I found the book easy to read and very hard to put down as I soon got hooked on the story. There is plenty of mystery, action, shipwrecks and even a missing treasure here and the story is quite exciting. The various characters are believable and interesting and the location is exotic and colourful.
Various criticisms have been made of Wilbur Smith in the past but no-one can doubt that he knows how to write an exciting tale. I enjoyed reading this book and, if you like adventure stories, you will too!
Summary: A good old-fashioned adventure story
