Advantages: Great Fantasy novel, Original King
Disadvantages: Bit hard to get used to...not Kings usual
Quite a strange one for King here, he delves into the litery world of fantasy for this book, bringing us to the wonderful kingdom of Delain and woods full of Dragons....and a familar old wizard. The sudden switch of King to writing a fantasy novel (and such a good one!) suggests some of that frustration that he tells us of when being typed as a horror writer, again using this as a vent to let off some 'litery steam'. The story introduces us to a King named Roland - no not THAT Roland - who is an old King and so far without an heir to his throne. He is presented with a few women and he takes who he views as the meekest - the truth is, he is afraid of women and feels quite overwhelmed by them, awwww bless. Finally producing an heir to his throne - Peter - the Kingdom is happy....the Kings magician Flagg however...is not and sets out to hatch a plan that will ensure he rules Delain. Flagg gives Roland a drink one night, supposed to give him courage to confront his wife sexually, Flagg enhances this one and Roland becomes rather nasty. His wife becomes pregant again and eventually gives birth to a second son, although dying during labour by instructions from Flagg - Thomas is the new childs name...Flagg has particular interest in this boy.... Flaggs plan becomes clear when he frames Peter for killing his father and Thomas is put in the throne - Peter in the tower. Thomas being weak in nature, lets Flagg advise him, or rather rule the kingdom. Flagg must be stopped...but using a dolls house and napkins??? - Don't worry, you'll find out. What is most interesting about this book is the similarities between it and The Dark Tower series. Is this deliberate by King? I believe that King is merely testing the water here with a fantasy book, seeing how his readers react, if you will. The ever-presence of Fagg again and the use of a Tower and even Roland is too much of a coincidence to be ignored...on reading this book f
or the fist time, i actually thought it may be what the outcome is for Roland on saving the Dark Tower! Although i know that this must be wrong now! An excellent change from the norm, The Eyes of The Dragon makes for an excellent fantasy novel...and if you are curious on how the boys fare after leaving Delain at the end of the novel, keep your eyes peeled in Kings upcoming The Dark Tower books.

- 23/01/02 I wouldn't make too many comparisons with "The Dark Tower". That was/is an epic, this is just one story. Yes, the names are the same, but Flagg was a name also appearing in "The Stand", and a lot of names repeat over the years. This always gives the impression of being aimed at a younger audience than "The Dark Tower" as well. |
