Advantages: Lots of useful information in one book
Disadvantages: Be prepared for a groove in your shoulder
I have been travelling around the world on holiday for most of my life, and since discovering these guides, I have found out so much more valuable information before I travel. The Eye Witness Guides originally were produced only for some of the world's capital cities - London, Paris etc. However, they now cover a lot more cities as well as some American states - I'm amazed at how may there are now (guides that is). I have collected a number of these guides for Rome, Florida, Prague etc. and recommend them for the following reasons: * They give a history of the country/city you are visiting * They are packed with information on places to visit and will save you having to buy individual guide-books for each museum/place of interest you want to visit * Lots of maps for cities and layouts for large places such as theme parks * In the back sections there is info on the local food, currency, transportation system, customs etc. These guides are relatively cheap, are well-written and have lots of colour photos and pictures. They are especially useful if you buy them in advance and use them to plan your holiday with. There is also information about shops, restaurants and places to stay. The guides cost from about £15 upwards. If there are any disadvantages, I'd say that they may be a bit on the heavy side in your hand-bag, especially for guides which cover large cities. They could also do with having a small section with a few phrases in the local language - then I wouldn't need to carry a phrase book as well!
