Fabulous Doodles - Nellie Ryan
Advantages: Keeps children entertained
Disadvantages: Not if you don't like colouring
Little Miss loves to colour and draw and we usually buy books similar to this especially when we are going away, to keep her amused on long journeys.
There are several books available in the range including: Beautiful doodles, the art Doodle Book, Doodle Dolls, The Boys' doodle Book 1 and 2 and The Girls' Doodle Book 1 and 2. They are available in book shops costing with a RRP of £9.99 but can often be found at a cheaper price in discount book stores. They are published by www.mombooks.com and full details of the available books are on the website.
This book is A4 size and a plain blue colour with doodles all over the front and back which instantly gives an idea of what the book is about.
There are over 100 doodles in the book all with a caption which indicates what the artist should do with the doodle. I think the book is more aimed at girls with the first doodle being a picture of a cushion and the caption "Cinderella's glass slipper", which tells the artist that they should draw a glass slipper on to the cushion. There are single and double page spreads including "Styke the horses mane and tail (single) and Picnic Time (double) showing two adies reclining beside a picnic rug ready to have the food and drink drawn onto the rug.
Some of the doodles are quite prescriptive and tell the artist what to draw for example , "Make a Magical mobile" and "Fill the box with buttons". However, many of the pages allow children to let their imaginations run wild since the captions are more open ended for example, there is a doodle of a fur clad lady with her hand out and the caption "What is she pulling?". Even the doodles with a definite end result in mind allow children to be creative and to use their imaginations since they have to decide on for example the design and colours of the dog's collar or the pictures inside the already doodled locket.
WHAT WE THINK OF THE BOOK...
These types of books are always popular with Little Miss and she can spend ages decideing on what she is going to draw and how she will finish the doodle. Its a great idea because children aren't faced with a completely blank piece of paper to fill, which can often be quite daunting if they can't decide on a subject. this gives them a starting point from which they can then design the end result.
the doodles themselves are strong black lines and the pictures are very definitely what they are intended to be; no ambiguity or uncertaintly about what the initial picture is meant to be.
There is a good range of subjects and different areas of life as well as doodles of people from different countries and cultures.
Overall, i would recommend this book for anyone with a budding artist or for someone who just likes to doodle themselves; I have, on occasion been found finishing off a picture just because it takes my fancy.
Thanks for reading
