Fallen - Lauren Kate
Advantages: A love triangle, a story that builds, kept my attention.
Disadvantages: Starts off a bit slow.
Luce's life is haunted by shadows and bad things tend to happen when they are around, but with her parents not trusting her and a past incident with a friend, Luce is stuck at the dark Sword & Cross reform school with the shadows threats ever increasing. Is she going mad?
From her first day at Sword & Cross Luce's attention is captured by Daniel. There's something familiar about him, something she can't quite make out, but Daniel seems to want nothing to do with Luce and she can't let it go. There is, however, somebody else who's after her affection... Cam... and she feels strangely drawn to him, despite her feelings for Daniel..
The setting of the book is dark, with the shadows tormenting Luce and the awful, almost haunting, depressing reform school she's been put in. The way the scenes are written makes you imagine that you could really be there. I thought the author did a great job with this.
The supporting characters are interesting too (wild-child Arriane, the quiet but friendly & investigative Penn, to name just a couple). There's more to some of them than meets the eye.
While the story starts off a bit slow, I did find that it built momentum as it went along and it held my attention well.
The back of the book describes is as "Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a thrilling story about forbidden love." and I'd certainly agree with that. I loved reading this book. By the time I was half way through it, I had already bought its sequel, Torment.
For some reason, I struggled with writing this review, but I don't know why because I really enjoyed the book!
Fallen is definitely for those readers who enjoy young adult fiction, fallen angels, some action and a bit of romance thrown in!
Summary: An enjoyable book
