Advantages: 4 puzzles, pieces stay in as pages are turned. Lively and clear illustrations

Disadvantages: The story is better told in the Usborne book, 'The Old Steam Train'

This is a board book with 4 puzzles.

Each open page has the story narrative with 4 pictures on the left hand side and a corresponding puzzle on the right hand side.

The story is an abridged version of the title 'The Old Steam Train' part of the Usborne Farmyard Tales series.

The story begins with Mrs Boot and her children Poppy and Sam and their dog Rusty rushing out to the station, the first puzzle is of everyone cleaning up the station. Sam and Poppy help, then they hear the old steam train arriving at the platform, this is the second puzzle picture. Poppy and Sam's dad is helping the driver, Poppy and Sam board the train, but Mrs boot stays behind as she is the guard today. The third puzzle shows the train about to leave the station. Mrs Boot waves a flag and the train puffs away, the final puzzle shows the train chugging across the countryside.

There is a duck to find on each page, which gives added interest. The puzzles each have some gold detail added.

The puzzles are easy to remove, there is a finger space in the top right hand corner of each puzzle. There are 9 pieces per puzzle, and 1 piece in each puzzzle is engine shaped.

When the puzzle is removed there is a picture underneath, which helps little ones to find where the pieces go.

The puzzle pieces stay in the book as the pages are turned. I have had experience of other puzzle books where the pieces drop out every time you turn a page, which is very annoying.

The illustrations are of the usual high standard that you get from Usborne illustrator Stephen Cartwright.

I would recommend this book for young children who like steam trains or who like the Usborne Farmyard tales. Age 2 - 4 approx.

Summary: Suitable for young children aged between 2 and 4 years.
