Advantages: Educational, lots of pages, fun
Disadvantages: None, except that the girl is stereotypically a bit of a pink fan
This is a book of opposites. There is no real narrative it is just pictures of a boy and girl in various situations doing or experiencing something opposite to the other. For example, the boy is out in the snow and the text says 'It's very cold' and on the facing page the girl is in a sun hat by the sea with the text, 'It's hot today'. As well as showing opposites the book also reads in rhyme.
The first two pages say, 'We're Nick and Sue, Hello, hello!', with the faces of the two main protaganists Nick and Sue who I assume are representative of the books award winning creators Nick Sharratt and Sue Heap. At the end of the book they say, 'We're Nick and Sue, Goodbye, goodbye!'. The illustrations have two distinct styles, presumably one set done by Nick and the other by Sue. The little boys pictures have black outlines and stronger strokes whereas those featuring the girl tend to be a bit lighter and her figure not as bold as the boys. Of course Sue's car in the bumpy/flat scenario is pink, but at least she's in the driving seat on the front picture with the little boy as passenger.
One of the good things about this book is that there are lots of pages for your money. A lot of childrens books are very short which some might think is apt for little peoples attention spans, but I find that my daughter gets bored of her books, so I get some from the library and rotate her books around and when she hasn't had one for a while she'll like it again. She also sometimes doesn't like some pages and quickly turns past them, so this one has lots of pages for her to choose from, making it one she's less likely to get bored with quickly. It has quickly become a firm favourite and has probably been looked at every day since we got it about a month ago.
This is a board book. It has 30 pages and is published by Puffin Books (7 Feb 2008). Cover price £4.99, available on Amazon for £4.74 & eligible for Free UK delivery on orders over £15 with Super Saver Delivery.
Summary: A bright, colourful and educational board book
