The British Isles is relatively poor in wildlife compared with mainland Europe. This is partly due to a lack of species making it across from Europe between the end of the ice age and the flooding of the land bridge forming the English Channel. The other reason is, of course, that the British people have managed to exterminate many of our native species such as wolves, beavers, and lynx. Despite the lack of wildlife, and our history of killing off species, people in Britain have a real fondness for nature, and a growing interest in our wild neighbours.
