Advantages: starts well!
Disadvantages: a let down for me!
I recently reviewed never look away, a thriller written by Canadian author, Linwwod Barclay. I really enjoyed the book, my first, experience of this author and was keen to get my hands on another of his books from my local library.
Fear the worst has glowing reviews on its dust cover and I was really looking forward to another exciting read!
After an argument with his 17 year old daughter one morning, Car salesman Tim Blake is concerned when his daughter fails to return home from her summer job. As his concerns grow, Tim decides to drive to his daughter Sydney's place of work to see if she is working late. However not only has she not been seen by any of the staff, but they all deny any knowledge of ever having met her. Tim's search leads him into extreme danger and a world of corruption. How well does Tim really know his daughter? Who can he trust? The novel is set in small town Connecticut.
As the novel unfolds we are introduced to more and more characters. There is Susanne, Tim's ex wife who always wanted him to be more ambitious and her new partner, Bob. Bob is a successful car dealership owner and has a teenage son from a previous marriage. There is no love lost between Bob and Tim. There is Patty, Sydney's best friend who is a real wild child! Tim has a new relationship with the paranoid Kate, another personality in the story. Tim has made it clear that he wants to cool things with Kate and this causes him more problems. There are his colleagues at the car show room where he works including the young newcomer Andy. When the police become involved in the search we are introduced to Kip Jennings, the female detective heading the investigation. The list of characters goes on and does make the story a bit complicated at times!
I was expecting to enjoy this novel as much as the previous one. However I was really disappointed! It starts promisingly enough with plenty of suspense but as the story unfolds I found parts becoming a little too drawn out. I don't want to give too much away, but the main action scene is a bit like reading a James Bond type story line and just as unlikely! There is plenty of graphic violence to contend with and I found some of this a bit repetitive.
The story certainly has lots of twists; some of them better executed than others! However for me, there are just too many coincidences and loose ends. When I finished the novel I was left with a real feeling of let down!
On the positive side I like the way the author introduces us to the character of Sydney through her father's eyes. I also had sympathy for Tim and his dilemmas. He certainly moves around quickly matching the pace of the story!
Overall I really can't recommend this novel as it just too unrealistic with loose ends that are left with no explanation leaving the reader frustrated! I borrowed my hardback copy from my local library, but the book is widely available in paperback.
