Advantages: excellent, funny well written
Disadvantages: none
Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby will attract a person who follows a sport that means something to them, in this case it happens to be football. I love sport and football and I found this book very interesting and some of the emotions expressed in this book I could empathise with. One instance he recalls how Arsenal were playing so badly that the supporters decided to cheer everything that their opponents did (Watford), in order to get to the players of how badly they were playing. Nick Hornby in writing this book won The William Hill Sports book of The Year Award in 1992 and I can see why. It is his obsession for Arsenal how his life is centred around them and everything else has to make way for Arsenal. He recalls every day that was important to him and of course that meant a description of the highs and lows of Arsenal football club. Every game to him is of equal importance, each game he wants the gunners to win. It is ironic that one of the lowest points of my time supporting Liverpool was his one his highest points, I will never forget that Michael Thomas goal right at the end of the 89/90 season when he luckily scored for Arsenal handing them the championship, though he later played for Liverpool, he will always be remembered for ‘that’goal,. Nevertheless this is still a good book, so good that you feel like reading some of the parts out loud as they are so good, he has really captured what a football fan feels like when their team wins, loses or draws. In other words he captures the emotions of the footballing fan which ever team you support. He lives Arsenal and does a really good job of putting across a point of view from someone who lives their life in that way, it has humour and everything else it needs to make it a good book. One person who was asked what they thought of the book said that Nick Hornby’s life is not lived in years but seasons. I think that that is a fair summing up. I know fo
otball fans who go to every games, and do everything a loyal supporter does but Nick Hornby is fanatical about his team. His love for his team is greater than anything else. Even if your team is not Arsenal it’s still a great read. A book I recommend to you, it’s not only a good book but a funny one aswell.
