Beloved - Toni Morrison:
... TONI MORRISON Is there anyone who has not come across Beloved ? If there is I would really recommend that you beg, borrow or steal (perhaps not steal!) a copy and read is ASAP. This book written by Nobel and Pulitzer prize-winning author Toni Morrison is an incredible, albeit disturbing book. This book is extraordinary on so many different levels, it is one that you will never forget, I guarantee that. ... Read the full review: Slavery Made Real by oldchem |

The Secret Scripture - Sebastian Barry ... was extremely disapppointed with this book, having heard the hype in regards to it. The book, in fairness, started well and had much potential to develop into something that could have been a haunting and moving narrative. Yet there was a form of detachment in the narrative that made the plot disjointed at times. The ending, I will write about without giving it away, was a disappointment. When it began to unravel, it was an outcome I considered and then dismissed as being nonsensical and completely unrealistic. The tying up of the plot seemed as if Mr Barry had got bored of plot and process of writing the story and decided he wanted to end it once and for all and ... Acting Up - Melissa Nathan ... Nathan had written The Nanny before this novel and it was published in 2003. I had read the previous Melissa Nathan book and fell in love with her type of writing because the books are such easy reading. We meet Jazz who is a journalist but she takes on the lead in a play even though she isn t an actress. The man running the production is the famous Harry Noble who everyone seems in awe of, all except Jazz. She manages to get herself in all sorts of trouble and is determined to make him see that he is nothing special just because he is a "Hollywood Actor". Her role as a journalist and an actress makes for some funny reading. Everything is building up... Read the full review: Easy reading and lighthearted by MrsE |

The Shadow Of The Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon ... is a wonderful read. In fact, it is the book that enabled me to arouse from the reader s block that I had over the course of a few years. I had heard lots of hype concerning the book, and that is usually the first thing that puts me off a book, as often such hype leads to an anti-climax. I was at the airport and given a minimal amount of time to chose a book and thought I would give it a try. From the moment I opened the first page, I was completely taken over by the writing style of the book, the wonderful master storyteller that is Carlos Ruiz Zafron. The book has truly encapsulated the supense genre and is a page turner that you regret coming anywhere near... Read the full review: Give me back my passion for reading by graceyhh |
