I was quite disappointed when I read this. I found it in paperback, finally, and rushed to buy it without reading any of the blurb about the book. I am so confident in Francis that I never have to, I love everything he has ever written. However........... I did not expect a collection of short stories. I don't like short stories. And, when I snuggled down into the sofa to open that latest Dick Francis, anticipation and intrigue running through my veins, imagine my horror when I found out what Field of 12 really was. I've read a couple of Dick Francis books and these stories appear to be in the classic Dick Francis style that is very apparent in his books. He paints vivid pictures of people we've all known at one time or another. I liked these stories even better than his books, because he breaks out of his traditional formula and gives us some really different surprises His horse details are very, very accurate and, even if you don't know horses, you leave with a lot of knowledge about them. It takes space to set up a horse theft or a racing scam, and to do it in short stories, Mr. Francis has had to reduce the solid background detail and tart social perceptions that distinguish his novels. The thefts and scams are, however, admirable; a couple are so enticingly plausible that the author appends advice to his introductory notes: "Don't do it!" This is a truly excellent collection of short stories! Dick Francis takes short departures from his typical style to bring us a grouping of stories painting vivid pictures of people we've all known.
