Advantages: A brilliant Teen Read during summer seasons
Disadvantages: none
I recommend this as a good summer chick lit. for all you male population out there, I am going to tell you to stop reading if you don’t like girly chick literature, but for all you young females, I am suggesting you read on, as this is the perfect book for taking on holiday with you to read.
*History on Kate Cann*
Kate Cann wanted to be a witch up until the age of thirteen when she started writing diaries, which parts of have been used in the diving in trilogy; the second book in the series. Kate never thought that she would become an author, but enjoyed writing and books, and so carried that on in later life, studying and achieving two degrees in English. She started work in a book publishing company after university and after she had two children, she became a freelance writer at home, and was displeased with teenage books telling teenagers that sex was all bad, and no good, and so she decided to write her own books, with quite a few facts included. Her first books published were the diving in trilogy, which I have to say, is a brilliant series. She got quite a few tips and ideas from her children who are now young adults themselves. Overall, Kate Cann has an interesting life and writes brilliant books.
*the story*
Laura, Ruth and Yaz have planned to go travelling round Spain for months now, after saving up all their money from their jobs. After turkey being a total disaster, where it’s all fake holiday rep stuff, these three girls wanted to search for the real Spain.
Thing is though, is Ruth is going out with a loser of a guy, tom. Three girls wanted to see Spain originally, and Ruth wasn’t going to go without tom. Tom has the car and is the only one who knows how to drive, so everything they earn or all of their money goes into paying for petrol for the car. All they ever seem to do is go from cheap motel to the car for a day’s drive to another cheap motel. But one day, a wrong turn leads them to a strange town, which seems beautifully peaceful. Tom isn’t happy though. He wants to get down to the coast of Spain and have the ‘fake’ Spain where it’s all holiday packages, all set up, all artificial, whereas the girls want the peaceful countryside and the life of what the Spanish are really like. Not the naff cheap version of it.
So when the wrong turn ends up in a place with fresh food, and real Spanish people, with real Spanish traditions, then things turn around for the better. Yaz and Laura suddenly cheer up and finally get to speak their mind which causes a rift in Ruth and tom’s relationship. Tom’s not happy with the next few decisions, but it leads the girls to heartbreak, love, hard work, unhappiness and also happiness.
This book is brilliant and definitely a teen chick novel. Full of love, lies, and friendships. It has many problems teenagers face and how to cope. I thoroughly advise anyone to read it.
*Quotes*
‘…kissing, wrapped round each other, going close to the edge but not over.’
‘So it is true then, falling in love is good for your looks. Being liked back helps too. Or, maybe it changes the way you see yourself. Whatever, it’s good’
‘…stop it I tell myself. You always do this when things are good – you always imagine them crashing down. Have some toast, get dressed and…’
‘…and suddenly it’s like this cold hand seizes hold of me, from the past that says, don’t feel so much. Or how will you feel when it’s over?’
‘…I’ve been scared of getting in too deep – getting hurt. It’s like I’ve got a…reflex that kicks in when I start to like someone. It slams the lid on when I start to feel things – it’s horrible.’

- 01/05/06 Your second paragraph is a bit confusing in a couple of parts, for instance, what does "the second book in the series" line connect to?
Other than that, it did feel a bit too much on the plot at the expense of reading experience, and I would happily have lost all the quotes at the end. |
