Fifty Shades of Grey - E L James
Advantages: a very stimulating and exciting read
Disadvantages: for me, none
Well a few months ago a few of my facebook friends were shyly admitting reading this raunchy book or questioning whether they should admit they were actually reading it. I'm not one for reading if I'm honest but curiousity killed this cat and I bought all three of the Grey books, 50 Shades of Grey, 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed, written by author E.L James.
The first book introduces us to the main characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. To me it's all quite realistic despite me not usually being able to relate much to american style writing or stories. They meet in a clumsy fashion and as their eyes lock together so do their feelings but in completely opposite and pretty shocking ways, at first. There is a lot of sexual content throughout the book, but this is not the 'story' behind 50 shades, there is more detail, journey and progress of characters to read which makes for an emotional and thought provoking read.
The book is very much as raunchy and way raunchier than I first expected which makes for a very thrilling and stimulating read but despite this excitement there is a true love story behind this which happens to progress slowly throughout this first book but in a scarily realistic way. I felt I could relate to the feelings of Ana yet understand Grey's unusual ways too.
This book caused a lot of debate and discussion between me and friends and it seemed to be half of us who only seen this as a one dimensional and pure sexual book whereas the other half of us, although enjoying this explicit part of the writing, endured the depths of the love story and really related to it and felt as one with this particular love journey as if we had experienced similar goings on in our own lives at some point. To me it carried a lot of emotions throughout the story, on top of the sexual excitement I must admit.
I felt I grew with Ana throughout the book, she began as a very amateur character in the book, but she grew as a person, stronger and more passionate throughout every page I read. It was hard not to talk like I was Ana meeting with Grey sometimes and talking about him as if he was a real person who I had spent time with. For me this is clever writing!
Christian Grey I actually found quite intimidating at first, the description of him is strong and powerful and overwhelming - yes I am talking now not Ana lol, yet we soon delve deeper into his character and I quickly warmed to him when I learnt of his weaknesses despite him not admitting them in this particular book, apart from brief clues that he is a lot softer than first meets the eye.
This first book brought excitement, nerves, tears and smiles - yes all from just me lol I really got stuck into the book and the story. After reading this book I couldn't wait to read the next 2, but did they live up to my expectations?
Summary: a very enjoyable read
