Well, what can I say about Fifty Shades of Grey that hasn't been said already. I was caught up in the drama of it and at first I didn't know what the story was about, I just heard about this book that was outselling everything else around it. In fact, according to an article I read, "The series has sold over 60 million copies worldwide, with book rights having been sold in 37 countries, and set the record as the fastest-selling paperback of all time, selling even faster than the Harry Potter series in paperback."
the book was released in 2011 and is classified as an erotic novel. it is written by British author E. L. James.
The two main characters are college graduate Anastasia Steele, and a very successful businessman called Christian Grey.
I found this book really bad. I don't read classic books by any means and I do like my romcom's and easy reading books but I found this really hard to read in that it was so badly written. There was so much casual chat and Anna was always saying things like "cool" and words like that. I skimmed a lot of pages just to get to the naughty bits, I must admit but then I have to say I don't think these parts were that naughty.
The naughty parts in question were some erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism and although I do not read other books like this I thought it was quite tame, this is a mainstream erotic book afterall.
It's funny because my husband gets the train with a lot of women and they were all reading it and they were telling him that it was chapter 8 where it really gets going and so when he came home that night he downloaded it onto his book reader and so I read it on that. I didn't have the paperback version so I could read it in relative obscurity and no one knew what I was reading. In fact, I took this to a spa weekend with my friends and read it around the pool as we were relaxing I joke with my mum because she belongs to quite a high brow book club and I always suggest that they should read this book but she says its not their type of fiction, ha ha!!
I found Christian quite an interesting character because there is a background to why he likes to dominate women. Some might call it abuse but I think both he and Anna entered into things both knowing what they were doing. Christian is portrayed as a good looking man, a great catch so it must of been fun dating him.
There are three books in the series and to be honest this is the only one that I am going to read. I spoke to a friend about it who has read all three and she basically gave me a quick synopsis about the other two and that was enough for me to know what happens in the end, I don't need to waste more time reading them.
