Fifty Shades of Grey - E L James
Advantages: Could warm to the characters
Disadvantages: Too repetitive
I decided to give this book ago a few months ago now as a lot of my friends were saying they were reading these books by E L James, so I thought I'd see what they were all going on about! This is the first of a trilogy, I have all three books, however I wish I hadn't bothered buying all three, after reading this one I will definitely not be bothering with the other two.
The story is about a girl named Anna, who meets a man called Christian Grey when she interviews him on behalf of a friend. He is instantly attracted to Anna, although it takes a while for Anna to realise she likes him. They start to meet up and spend time together and eventually end up sleeping together. Christian likes to dominate Anna, and has a secret room in his house where he ties her up, hits her, punishes her etc. Anna has never experienced anything like this before as she was a virgin before she met Christian.
Christian wants Anna to agree to a 'contract' he has drawn up where he gets to control Anna, punish her and do whatever he wants to her sexually. Anna finds he has done this with other girls, and has also had it done to him. She is determined to find out why he is the way he is as she just wants a normal relationship with him, and Christian says he is not capable of this.
I found Christians character quite likeable, he did always help Anna when she was in trouble and seemed to actually genuinely care for her. Anna I found was a likeable girl, who was very out of her depth with Christian!
Although this storyline actually had the potential to be brilliant, this book has got to be one of the worst I have read. I don't usually read this type of thing, so maybe for people who do, it is a good read, but it was not for me. It wasn't the storyline that I didn't like, it was the author's way of writing, and how much she repeated things. She dragged things out way too much. There were about 6 pages about 20 times in the book just filled with them sleeping together and Christian dominating Anna, which was half of the book. It was repeated over and over again, and I don't think this was necessary, it was the same things over and over again. A quarter of the book was wasted on emails which filled about 10 pages a time, and about a quarter of the book was the actual story! I liked the emails between Anna an d Christian but they took up so much space in the book, it made the book look a lot longer than it is.
Certain lines in the book were repeated, not once or twice, but a dozen times, which I have never known an author to do before. It was too repetitive, too many pages were spent on certain scenes, I ended up skipping a lot of pages in the book.
I wouldn't recommend this book if you don't usually read this type of thing, just because it seems very popular. I don't know what people are raving about with these books, it was repetitive, not well written and I will not be bothering to carry on with the trilogy!
Summary: Not a book I would recommend unfortunately
