Some people are pissed off - there is nothing to fight for anymore. The social fabric of our world is splintering and the taboo is now not taboo. My generation has little direct contact with the horrors of war. There is little struggle in the Western Democracies for food. People have disposable income for films; for furniture from Ikea and other such luxuries - there is little struggle in order to live and so there is a void. There are no causes anymore - with the exception of the slightly anarchist anti capitalist brigade and George Bush's manic struggle to embolden our generation with a crusade against terrorists - which fails to spot the fact that people may ... From the intriguing opening, where the narrator describes a gun being pushed into his mouth while he stands atop a building rigged with explosives, Fight Club draws the reader in and then keeps them reading. Starting a novel near the end of the story isn’t an original idea, in fact it’s probably been done to death, but it is testament to Chuck Palahniuk’s simple yet curious writing style that the book has become so successful. Of course, the recent release of the film version probably didn’t harm the book’s sales either! After a few pages of this opening scene, where it appears the narrator will die either from being shot by the ... Read the complete review

Rule 1:“Don’t Talk About Fight Club” Rule 2:”Don’t Talk About Fight Club” Fight Club written by Chuck Palahniuk is a book, which incorporates the structure of society and the differing beliefs that we as a people have. Relating to the blockbuster movie starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, Fight club is almost dreamy and unreal in its presentation. Chuck Palahniuk has succeeded in creating a completely abstract and disillusioned environment within these pages. The Plot The plot is featured around a club entitled Fight Club. It is within these club meetings that people engage in combat, claiming that the ... Read the complete review

//* THE FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB IS YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB So first of all let's clear something up. Chuck Palahniuk's name is up for debate. I puzzled for some time over how to pronounce his name. According to the official site it is pronounced pa-laa-nik. So there you go. //* THE SECOND RULE OF FIGHT CLUB IS YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB I'd already seen Fight Club at the cinema twice and on video a million times. It is to me undoubtedly my favourit film of all time. Out of sheer curiosity I read the the book just to see what it was like. Now you should know that I don't read books. I didn't ... I had a friend who kept going on about Chuck Palahniuk. He was the best writer there ever was, a god, a true genius. Without his constant "Read this! Read this!", I might never have given it a second thought, and then also I might never have read "American Psycho", another novel he kept going on about and kissed the shelves it sat on. I read Bret Easton Ellis' "American Pyscho" a while back and it was truly fantastic. The writing was superb, it was truly disturbing, and I loved every minute of it. So I thought, maybe this guy was on to something with his constant praise of Palahniuk's ... Read the complete review
