Advantages: GREAT ENDING
Disadvantages: A LITTLE GRAPHIC
Chuck Palahniuk writes FIGHT CLUB which was later turned in to a film.
The book centres on a first person narrator with no name. He suffers from insomnia and goes to support classes where he meets Marla as they try to get through life. Fed up with his job he meets a character called Tyler Durden who represents the high life with his flash clothes while making money through selling soap.
Tyler and him decide to start an underground fight club where men can fight with just one rule, 'the first rule of fight club, don't talk about fight club'. The fight club gets so popular that they start another group with the point of destroying capatalism which leads to lots of tragedies. With Marla to think about as well everything starts spinning out of control for the narrator, though can he survive the ordeal.
This book has a great premise and non stop action. The chapters go from one to another and when Tyler enters the fray it really picks up. The relationship between Tyler and the narrator is great and they really bond. The first person narration means we get inside the narrator's mind which is crucial towards the end of the book. Palahniuk has created some memorable sayings in the book particularly, 'the first rule of fight club is you don't talk about fight club'.
The fight club fights are brutally detailed and can be difficult to read because of the graphic violence. There is a homosexual feel to the book with all the men fighting, but it never actually leads anywhere. It can get confusing in certain chapters as you don't know where the narrator is and sometimes it is complicated to decipher what he's trying to say.
The ending is brilliant with a suprise twist which turns events on their head. The book also attacks capatalism to the extreme so has good sub plots and messages. The writing is terrifc as towards the end of the book you apreciate how clever it actually is. Some people might find the language in th book a little offensive.
At nearly 300 pages this is a truely great read.
