Advantages: bright board book
Disadvantages: not very well written
Fireman Sam has been a favourite in our household for many years, I can't say that I am a huge fan of the new Fireman Sam, I'm an old fashioned girl at heart, but I suppose it's what the kids like that matters! This book is based on one of the stories from the S4C TV series and contains pictures from the episode.
This Fireman Sam story is published by Egmont and is a board book measuring 15.8 x 15.8 x 1.6 cm, which I find a little big for the smallest of hands to cope with! It has a lovely bright red cover with a picture of Fireman Sam holding Bella the cat in his arms on the front. It has a RRP of £3.99.
'Fireman Sam to the Rescue' describes what happens when Bella's beloved cat Rosa goes missing in a storm. James and Sarah find her with her collar caught on a fence and call the fire brigade who swiftly come to save the day.
I find this a lovely book to read out loud as there's an opportunity to do a dodgy Italian accent when Bella speaks and you get to utter the immortal words 'GREAT FIRES OF LONDON!' when Sam reads the emergency message.
I haven't found this book cheaper than the RRP but I was happy to pay full price for it. It's well loved and is so strong and well made that it isn't going to fall apart any time soon. I love that it's in a board book format as the boys can look at it by themselves or carry it around without me worrying about the pages getting ripped all the time.
This story definitely isn't a work of great literary genius, I find that stories based on episodes of TV series never seem to flow very well, but the story is engaging and the bright pictures are very popular with my little ones. It's not a long story so is probably only really suitable for children up until the age of about 4.
Summary: very popular in our house!
