Advantages: Brilliant characterisation and plot

The Firm is the second novel from the award winning legal thriller writer John Grisham. It has been adapted into a film, and remains one of his better novels.

The Plot

Mitch McDeere is a hotshot law student graduating at the top of his class. He lands a job with the top law firm in Memphis, but also lands himself in a whole heap of trouble. Bendini, Lambert & Locke is a law firm at the top of its peers, but the FBI are after them for something, and their best way in is through Mitch. With both sides using Mitch's brother Ray, residing in prison, as leverage, the young lawyer must make a stand, but on which side of the law?

My Opinion

Grisham is very good at putting his lead characters between a rock and a hard place. Here, the character development of Mitch McDeere is very well done, from hot shot law student on top of the world, to a panicked young man scared for his own life. Grisham does not top A Time To Kill, his first novel, but he does cement his position as a top author, showing with a very good second novel that the brilliance of his first was no fluke.

His writing is flowing and easy to read, and the words roll through effortlessly, and I find the raw talent on show here amazing once more. The Firm is not as good as A Time To Kill, but it is still an excellent novel.

Conclusion

Brilliant second novel.

I rate this book at 5 stars out of 5.
