The author ---------------------- Edith Nesbit was born in 1858 and died in 1924. Her family were wealthy and when she moved to Halstead House where she lived for three years, these were the happiest years of her life. There was a railway cutting near her house which she used to explore (in comes the book!). Nesbit was a very successful author and her books continue to sell well even today. Her first children's book was "The Treasure Seekers" and wrote many other popular books such as "Five Children and It". This book was first produced in 1906 and so far has never been out of print. we no longer tie ourselves up in high collars and bodices and no longer segregate ourselves along strict class-lines alone; but the central point of The Railway Children is, as E. Nesbit so clearly stated, to slowly introduce children to the sometimes unpleasant and often unfair world around them. Fashions and attitudes might have changed in a century but the process of growing up hasn t. That process of a child s awakening to the wider world is no different now to how it was in 1906 and to how it will be in 2106. It s for that reason that I think The Railway Children is still worth looking into. At the very least it is a charming and simple read whatever else we ...
