we no longer tie ourselves up in high collars and bodices and no longer segregate ourselves along strict class-lines alone; but the central point of The Railway Children is, as E. Nesbit so clearly stated, to slowly introduce children to the sometimes unpleasant and often unfair world around them. Fashions and attitudes might have changed in a century but the process of growing up hasn t. That process of a child s awakening to the wider world is no different now to how it was in 1906 and to how it will be in 2106. It s for that reason that I think The Railway Children is still worth looking into. At the very least it is a charming and simple read whatever else we ...
