James Herbert has done it again, What a cracker. This has got to be one of the best books he has written. Alot of books you need to get a few chapters in before the suspense kicks in. Not the fog; Herbert has managed to roll straight in to the action with a minor earthquake in a small village in Wiltshire, a fog rises and anyone in contact with the fog turns completely bonkers and ends up killing others and themselves. After reading 'The Dark' also by Herbert I thought I'd have to try another. I settled upon 'The Fog' after the comical classic film by the same name (not ment to be humorous but if you've seen it you'll know what I mean). My friend had told me the fog was like an enhanced version of the dark, but is clearly wrong. The story is much like the dark, there is a large crack in the earth which releases a strange mist which causes extreme insanity to all who encounter it, even the main character who is one of the first to be effected. I haven’t read this one yet but after reading various reviews I can give you a fair idea what it’s about. Basically it appears that a fog mysteriously appears which seems to have the effect of turning people who encounter it into mad killers. As is usually the case with this sort of story it came about as a result of an experiment gone wrong, this time by a Ministry of Defence scientist who was developing some form of bacteriological warfare germ. After an earthquake the gas was released into the atmosphere where the germ mutated in such a way that it feeds on blood cells and entering the brain as a parasite, hence the madness !
