The Kalahari Typing School for Men - Alexander McCall Smith

Premium Review A round of hot buttered toast delivered on paper (429 words)
by storageheater - written on 06/12/05 (Useful, 55 readings)
Rating:

(I really think I m spelling these names wrong, but it s the assistant woman, that s all you need to know) is, almost by definition, a secondary character, and McCall Smith s characterisation is as gentle as his prose - which can be slightly unsatisfying. Now I come to think of it, the competition of the other agency really doesn t get much look in either. It s all rather like a dream. I intended to write an unequivocal thumbs up, but it s difficult. These books are delicious but not meaty, yet there is often an unexpectedly strong (yet oh so delicately put) opinion or two hidden in there. They re very, very easy books to read - hugely comforting - but wafer thin. You ...

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith

Crowned Review I Highly Recommend It If You Like To Be Happy (1090 words)
by jillmurphy - written on 30/08/04 (Very useful, 2269 readings)
Rating:

Precious Ramotswe would like to be the Miss Marple of the African continent. When her father dies, she does as he has asked ? as any good daughter would ? and sets up a business. Mma Ramotswe's business is not exactly the one her father had imagined, though. Precious sets up the very first ladies' private detective agency in Botswana. Its assets are modest: an office; an old white van; two desks; two chairs; a telephone and an underworked secretary. Unambitious this may seem but the real asset to Mma Ramotswe's detective agency is Mma Ramotswe herself. An ample woman ? "Hey fat lady, what are you ...

Premium Review Bothering 'bout Botswana! (914 words)

About a year ago, I read The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. I enjoyed it and got the second book in the series – free through bookhopper.com – but I hadn’t got round to reading it until recently. A week or so ago, I decided to choose it and began reading. It didn’t take long before I was back in the world of Mma Ramotswe in Botswana, Africa and it was a world I was happy to revisit. Mma (Mrs) Precious Ramotswe is a black, overweight African woman who is a real heroine. She is the only female private detective in her country and she also manages to be kind, caring, generous, moral and an all round great woman. Unlike many heroines, she is ...
