As an avid book reader I bought Foods that harm, Foods that heal some ten years ago. I had at that time a subscrition with the Readers Digest and because of that was sent information on some of their other publications. It was quite expensive, £25.00 if my memory serves me correctly, however, over the years it has more than paid for itself by the numerous occassions I have turned to it for reference for one reason or another. The book itself is hardbacked and contains some 400 pages. All of the references in the book have come from respected sources, (Doctors with fancy letters after their names) and you should therefore have faith in the information you ... When it came to me writing about this book I wasn't sure if it should be under the book title or if I should write about the Charity Shop that I bought it from as both are really great subjects. Knowing I would probaly be lynched for putting it under the wrong heading I decided to go under the book title to be on the safe side ( well I hope so!). Now this isn't really the sort of book I would normally go for, as I love cookery books and could browse through them for hours looking for new meals to prepare. This isn't a cookery book, but an extremely helpful and very interesting book to read. It keeps you interested and fascinated about all sorts of different ... Read the complete review

This A-Z "Guide to Safe and Healthy Eating" is a Reader's Digest Publication first produced in 1996 and since reprinted with amendments. I bought it priced around the £25 mark around ten years ago. Whilst that seemed like an expensive retail price at the time this sturdy, hardback dictionary of all things food related (stretching over 400 pages) has been well worth the money. The information in the book was compiled with the help of three hundred qualified health professionals. Fourteen main contributers are listed in the introduction alongside details of their credentials. There is no doubt that these contributers, most of whom are awarded with ... Read the complete review

Readers Digest books have always been quite expensive but excellent quality and we bought this book when it was published in 1996, at the cost of £25, which was a lot of money back then! But as someone who is intolerant to several foods I thought this would be helpful and I have to say it has been. Contributors and consultants are either doctors or other professionals with lots of letters after their names and the information given is easy to read and understand. There are two opening pages with general facts about Food and Health and some tips on how to use the book. At the end of the book is a glossary with explanations on unfamiliar terms and an Index with ... Read the complete review

I bought this book as a special offer together with another one called The Guide to Vitamins and Minerals. The price for the two was around £26.99 if I remember rightly. It's a good solid hard backed book 400 pages in length, although that does include all the acknowledgements and writing credits. Its also got a good many of the pages taken up by photographs and illustrations some of them are useful for identification purposes, for example, depicting the funghi you can and can't eat whilst some are just pretty pictures probably used to pad the book out and make it look a little more appealing. Virtually every ailment you can think of is in ... Read the complete review
