Advantages: great detail,addictive,classic
Disadvantages: the length
I've never read anything by Hemmingway, and i probably wouldn't have, but i live in Italy and when i went to the the local library searching for English or American novels "for whom the bell tolls" was the only one there, and i was not dissapointed. The story is about an American called Robert Jordan who goes to spain to fight for the Republicans against the fascists in the spanish civil war, his job is to blow a bridge which could very well in the near future determine the outlook of the war. Whilst there he meets a group of banditos who are to aid him in his task, this is were the story begins really. It is full of emotion, sadness, pain and hope and is rated as the greatest fictional novel of the spanish civil war. There is great detail to the many horrible acts that war brings and a strange understanding to peoples emotions when put into battle. This in my opinion is one of the best novels i've ever read, and i've read a lot,by classic writers and modern ones. I found this book terribly addictive and would advise everybody to read it. The only problem most people will have with it,is it's length it has 413 pages to get through, but it is worth your patience.

hulahoop - 09/12/00 You gave me a NU for my Aldous Huxley's Brave New World op. Not that I necessarily expect more than that, but could you please leave a comment on it explaining why and/or what I could do to improve it.
I notice you have written an op on the same book, and from here it looks as if you have just rated it to make your op look better. Apparently this is something I can report to the dooyoo police, so if you could explain to me why it was so bad I will gladly accept your rating :o) |
