After reading Almost a Crime I decided to check out her other books. I have not been disappointed. The story starts off in 1995 when three ladies meet for lunch as they have done for the past 50 years on that date and then it goes off into the past in fact the year 1938. It mainly follows the main character Grace around and how she meets her husband Charles and all the differences in their lifes. The fortunes are quickly changed as war breaks out and Charles is drafted into the army. The story tells us how things were during the wartime and as the characters are mainly upper class how it affects them if at all. Grace takes in two evacuees David and Daniel who she comes to look upon as her own. Grace is devasted when she gets a message that her husband Charles has been killed after trying to escape and she falls in love with Ben the childrens father. After announcing their engagement Grace recieves a telephone call telling her in fact Charles was alive and it was a soldier who had been with Charles who was killed. She miscarries Bens baby through all the upset and when Charles returns home she stays with him even though she doubts she has ever loved him. Ben is her true love and try as she might she can not get him out of her mind. I wont spoil the ending as it is brilliant. An excellent book well written and very compulsive reading.
Grace's husband disappears, presumed dead, during the war. But her life with new fiance faces problems when her husband shows up suddenly.
