This, the novelization of a famous film, is an very enjoyable book, with the same mixture of humor and horror as Catch-22 but plainer and more evenly written. It consists of days in the lives of Bronx cops and victims, both of crime and of the cops; it's pychologically acute, very pessimistic but humorous at the same time, with the whole story bound together by the motif of an athletic bag-snatcher whom the protagnonist police officer encounters and pursues at various points in the story. Whether the film is as good, I don't know, but I can't remember ever seeing it. If it is, it's worth seeing, and will probably enhance your enjoyment of the ... Read the complete review
