It becomes harder and harder to review this series without giving awa some of the surprises that are in store along the way. be warned if you haven't read Foundation's Edge....don't go on! This is where the series started to stagnate for me. Granted, Asimov was trying something completely different here, where, instead of pitting the Foundation against an unknown force for a thrilling 400 pages, he simply has our main characters wandering around the galaxy, visiting one dead planet after another wondering if they can find earth at all. I have to admit to feeling let down by this one. The original Foundation trilogy was superb, absolutely beyond compare. The sequel, Foundation's Edge, was more than a little contrived, and gave the definite impression of being something tagged on the end, rather than being a part of the original planning. This one goes even further down that route; the whole premise of the plot seems very far fetched. At the end of the last one we left Golan Trevize, who had just been asked to make the most important decision in the history of mankind.
