Advantages: Imaginative, A whole new perspective, Inspired the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy
Disadvantages: None
The foundation series by Isaac Asimov is possibly the most famous series of books in the history of science fiction. This first book entitled Foundation is by far the best in the series and it introduces you to Hari Seldon, the man who later becomes the most famous man in the whole galaxy, and his quest to stop the galaxy from heading into it's own annihilation and turmoil for millions of years. His plan is to try to limit the turmoil to 10,000 years as it is already too late to completely stop it from happening. To do this he sets up the ?Foundation?, a small disregarded planet on the edge of the galaxy where he sent the best scientists he could find to try to develop new technologies and keep the current ones alive. His whole plan is foreseen by the use of psychohistory, a curious method of psychology that predicts the exact movements and events of people. This book from the offset is action packed and lures the reader completely into it then it develops into a true masterpiece of literature, enticing the reader to go on, delving further into the events that the foundation comes up against. It is extremely well written and can gain your full attention until you finish it. I managed to read it in about a day and was disappointed that it did not continue longer as I yearned for more information about the future of the foundation and it?s population. This book has inspired another also extremely well known science fiction episode, The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy. ?Foundation? introduces the famous Encyclopaedia Galactica which gives a detailed explanation of things at the beginning of each new section of the book. These explanations are helpful in explaining the forthcoming section and the relevance of it in galactic history. There were originally three books in the Foundation series but now Asimov has upped that to I think five or six books. The original ?Foundation? book is however by far the best of them all an
d is a must read for everyone as it expands your imagination greatly and gives you a different perspective on the big question, What the hell is going on out there! I highly recommend this book and it is an essential read for any person whether interested in science fiction or not. If you were to start reading this book tomorrow, I guarantee that you will not be able to put it down until it is completely finished and then you like me will yearn for more.
