Advantages: saved me writing, Iread these books liked them
Disadvantages: ?
Asimov’s Foundation trilogy When I first read these books at the age of 13, I was absolutely glued to them for about two weeks. The stories are amazingly powerful in terms of their ideas. The writing is weak and the characters poorly described -however the ideas are so clever that I was completely hooked. It hadn’t occurred to me when I read these that the world could exist any other way than the way it was, Asimov showed that it could -if governments wanted it to. The basic plot is that historians and scientists notice patterns of repeating civilising and de-civilising influences in human society. They realise that we are headed for a fall back into barbarianism. To prevent the slide into anarchy they set up a new and powerful religion and soon everyone is tricked into behaving as required to prevent the decline. Or are they, the scientist/historians controlling the human race are not expecting a mutant human being to mess up all their carefully predicted patterns of Human Social behaviour. Along comes a mutant and rebel to boot, will the government manage to suppress him or will he subvert their plans and plunge the human race back into darkness by undermining the force of an imposed religion. After I started reading this I could sense that all types of organisation were trying to control the way I thought about stuff. A really enlightening read, but hard work in places as the plot is slow. Asimov went back and added two new titles to this series later. This is my husband’s opinion he wrote it when he was commenting about mine (I told him to write one instead of criticising mine so he did) I thought it quite good so decided to post it. I have his permission. thanks for reading Mary
