Advantages: Escapism
Disadvantages: Finishing the book
For those of you who haven't yet read this - do. For those of you who have, I'm no doubt preaching to the converted. This book begins to reveal the sweep of Asimov's vast empire in the sky and is like, in my opinion, many great science fiction novels in that the insights it can provide into our situation today aren sometimes breathtaking. The concept underlying the Foundation series is Psychohistory - the theory of predicting the future based on observation of human actions in the past. The aim is to provide a basis for a redevelopment of human civilisation in the face of the oncoming galctic destruction. What makes the book so readable is that not only does it provide engaging looks at peoples' charcters but also that it does not rely on great flights of fantasy. Rather the whole scenario is presented in a calm and assured manner, making the novel accessible to even those who do not normally read science fiction.

- 25/03/01 Sorry for the low rating, but as a fan of the series, I don't think you can do it justice in such a short opinion. There is a lot more to the series than what you have said, and I think you should explain it better for new readers. Let me know if you add anything and I'll come back for another look. |
