I am a little surprised to find myself sitting here about to review a book that centres on the sport of golf. I use the term sport in the loosest possible manner as I belong to the school of thought that golf is indeed a good walk spoiler. I do not deny the skill that is required or the talent of the games greatest exponents. It just appears to me to be the most tedious and odious methods of passing time that man has ever invented. My opinion may be coloured by the fact that most of those who are attracted to the sport at my place of work happen to be the most crashing bores! Sports books tend to come in two varieties. There's the knowledgeable, specialist book strictly for devotees of the sport (Jeremy Whittle's "Yellow Fever" or Eduardo Galeano's "Football In Sun & Shadow" being two such examples), and then there's the more witty, lighthearted approach, where the writing style makes the book appealing and accessible to everyone, even those who may not particularly like the sport in question. Nick Hornby's "Fever Pitch" is possibly the best example, a book about obsession with football which managed to entertain, enlighten and even convert plenty of football-haters. Lawrence ... This is an excellent sports book offering at least three original perspectives on professional sport: it is a unique insight into the perils of being a struggling tour golfer, a telling portrait of the oddball nature of tour caddies and also the amusing tale of an outsider looking in at a closed and peculiar community. Lawrence Donegan takes on the role of caddie for humdrum pro Ross Drummond and their year begins badly. Soon, Drummond is contemplating a return home and the humiliation that is the even more humdrum life of the club golf pro.
