There is something very uncomfortable about watching old recordings of the black and white minstrels. Back in the day it was not seen as particularly racist, but great family entertainment. Thankfully society has moved on and the more enlightened of us see that impersonating black people and their supposed stereotypes is not on. However, how do we tackle issues about the black community today? Sensitively for sure, but for some people this is easier said then done. When writing about gang cultures in America depending on who the author is can make the dialogue succeed or fail.
