Anne McCaffrey in general

Premium Review Sci-fi - with the emphasis on the fi (677 words)
by ermintrude - written on 18/07/00 (Very useful, 43 readings)
Rating:

I wouldn't really describe myself as a huge sci-fi fan, and perhaps that's Anne McCaffrey's strength - her writing appeals to those who associate sci-fi with Captain Kirk, Luke Skywalker, and assorted contorted-latex-headed aliens, and use that as a reason for steering clear. It's definitely the fiction, as in the storylines and characters, rather than the science, which takes precedence. In fact, occasionally (especially when the known laws of physics would cause a little bit of plot inconvenience) the science gets shunted to the back and glossed over a bit, forming little nuggets of what those on the newsgroup refer to as "Annescience". ...

Dragonflight - Anne McCaffrey

Crowned Review Here Be Dragons... (1554 words)
by CaptainD - written on 26/07/05 (Very useful, 168 readings)
Rating:

book is extremely accomplished. I had heard many good things about McCaffrey, and after reading Pegasus in Space, one of her other sci-fi books, I couldn t see why. After reading Dragonflight, I can easily see why. I m reading the second Chronicle of Pern as we speak… Yep, I m hooked! It s an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy. Well, it s more true to say that it is fantasy with sci-fi explanations rather than your normal magic and myth. This is showing you how the mythology is actually created. Round-up If you like science fiction or fantasy, I am sure you will enjoy this book. If you want a light read, though, it s probably not what you re looking ...

Dragonflight - Anne McCaffrey

Premium Review To the sky (439 words)
by jiloppyman - written on 14/11/01 (Very useful, 316 readings)
Rating:

200 years, the alignments of another planet in the system comes close enough to Pern that the Threads “fall from the sky” to the surface of Pern. Anne McCaffrey writes with a certain fluidity that is rare amongst the works of Heroic Fantasy. Many writers, such as Raymond E Feist, have included dragons in their works but none to the best of my knowledge have had intimate relationships with humans. It may sound strange but the ideas used to create the relationships have very strong foundations and compliment the progress of the book.. The Dragonriders are the sole protection against the Threads and so when the threads fall, the fire breathing, ...
