Once I read the back of the book, I figured that it had to be interesting, which it was. I believe, however, that it could still have been good if it was a little shorter. There was a lot of unnecessary information contained in it and the book would have been much better if this had been omitted. In this book the author takes the skeletal narrative outline of a real-life crime, but in my opinion fails to put enough meat on its bones. Freedomland by Richard Price I had to read this book after the rave review it got on the Black Star Review web site. The book certainly lived up to expectations. The best crime fiction is about more than criminal acts and police investigations; crime fiction allows an author to shine a light on the dark places society prefers to forget. This book is a prime example of that. A car-jacking and the disappearance of a white child in a black neighbourhood leads to an explosive, racially charged situation.
