Advantages: Well laid out, fun and simple activities for children to practice.
Disadvantages: None
This is the second Oxford Numeracy book that I have reviewed, and I said previously, these books were of great benefit to me as a substitute teacher just after graduating. This book is aimed at ages 3 and 5, but could also be used with older children who struggles with some of the concepts of shape and size.
As with the other Oxford book I reviewed 'Fun with Counting' this book is extremely well laid out, with 31 different pages full of fun activities, always with things to colour.
There are various concepts explored in this book, giving children practice in:
2D shapes (circle, square etc etc)
finding and colouring 2D shapes hidden in a picture.
matching shapes
patterns - similarities and differences
directions of patterns
completing patterns
continuing a repeating pattern
size - finding objects the same or different sizes
big and little
Bigger/Biggest
Smaller/Smallest
Longer and shorter
Positional words eg. under, between, in front, behind ..
3D shapes (cubes, cones, spheres, pyramids, cylinders)
This book has been created in a such a way that it stimulates children's learning by providing educational activities but at the same time, letting children think they are colouring in or drawing. All the activities look appealing, and it something that could be taken on holiday or in the car for children to work on to reinforce these very important concepts.
As I have previously said I have had great use out of these books, and I have never once hear a child complain about the activities. This book can be purchased on Amazon for £2.99, I bought mine in Banana bookshop for £1.39.
There are a range of other books in the series by Jenny Ackland including:
Fun with Numbers, Fun with Reading and Fun with Writing. I would highly recommend this series.
Summary: A great asset for a parent or teacher for foundation stage children.
