The Brimstone Wedding - Barbara Vine

Premium Review Fire and brimstone (863 words)

Rating:

lovers tryst. Will Jenny pluck up the courage to leave her husband for her lover? And will she find out about Stella s own tragic love story? Barbara Vine, the author of this book, is a psedonym for Ruth Rendell, well-known for her Wexford mysteries. As Barbara Vine, her books tend to have a more mysterious aura - this one, for example, delves into mysticism and charms - and they tend to be more psychological, so that, although this is still a mystery, there is nothing of the police procedural about it. And the mystery does seem to be buried rather deeply in this book - at first glance, it seems to be a story of two women s affairs, and certainly much of the book is ...

The Brimstone Wedding - Barbara Vine

Crowned Review The Clothes of the Dead Wear As Well As Any Other (1306 words)
by plipplop - written on 27/06/06 (Very useful, 96 readings)
Rating:

film in the same way that the book can. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was (or even already had been) dramatised. Although the author is credited as Barbara Vine, it wasn’t until I read the notes at the beginning that I realised that it was in actual fact Ruth Rendell under a different name (I’m slow – work with me on this). And there is something characteristically “Ruth Rendell” about this book. Contrary to what I had expected, I enjoyed The Brimstone Wedding. The controlled, subtle story telling was different to what I am used to reading and the tale is told in a particularly absorbing fashion. If you were looking for thrills and excitement then this ...

The Blood Doctor - Barbara Vine

Premium Review Multiple story lines confidently woven together (267 words)
by hashford - written on 11/06/06 (Useful, 45 readings)
Rating:

I have only recently started to read the books of Barbara Vine (aka Ruth Rendell) and when I picked The Blood Doctor up I was expecting a psychological thriller. And what a pleasant surprise I got – this book was even better! The Blood Doctor tells the story of Martin Nanther’s attempt to write a biography of his great-great-grandfather, Henry Nanther. We join with Martin in his attempts to unpick Henry’s story through direct research and interviews with members of his extended family. Interwoven with Henry’s story are other minor themes involving Martin’s sadness over the loss of his hereditary seat in the House of Lords, and his and his wife’s attempts to have a ...
