Advantages: GREAT RESEARCH
Disadvantages: KEMP A BIT COCKY
GANGS is the excellent book by Ross kemp to go with his Bafta award winning television series on SKY ONE.
The book goes into more detail about the experiences Kemp went through across the globe meeting some very dangerous gangs.
The book is split into seven chapters each on the area he is visiting.
1) rio de janiero - Kemp meets gangs in the Shanty Towns where the environment is too disgusting to describe and the crimes are even worse.
2)NEW ZEALAND - Kemp meets Maouri Criminals who tatoo their faces. Kemp becomes really good friends with one of the men he meets.
3) EL SALVADOR - Kemp travels to El Salvador to meet the gangs there. It's not only the gangs that are dangerous, but everything about the country.
4) ST LOUIS - Kemp notices the effects of gangs just walking the streets of St Louis as the streets are paved with fowers of people who have been killed by gangs. Kemp investigates why there is so much killing.
5) CAPE TOWN - For me the best chapter as Kemp visits the numbers gang in Pollsmoor Prison. The conditions of the prison will leave you amazed as well as the evilness of the prisoners he meets.
6) MOSCOW - Kemp meets neo -nazis including young girls and finds out why they are so ful of hatred towards the mixed races. Kemp goes through a training regime with the gang including getting set on fire and having things shot at him.
7) JAMAICA - Kemp finishes the book in Jamaica where the gangs are needing money for wealth.
Kemp finishes with a short conclusion on his experiences.
The book is very hard hitting. You need to have a strong stomach to handle some of the stories about murder and the things that go on in prisons.
There is great detail in everything Kemp explains about the gangs and it's good to see a book that has been well researched. Kemp seems to really love the process of finding what makes gangs tick and you can feel that in the way he writes. There is also some humour as Kemp tell's the humourous things that happened along the way particularly about the crew.
Sometimes Kemp comes across as a bit too cocky though he does admit you need to be calm otherwise the gangs might strike.
At just under 250 pages and avaliable from as little as £3 at AMAZON this is a really excellent book.
Summary: GANGS BAD, BOOK GOOD!
