During the 12-year trip, Nicole des Jardins bears five children to the two men aboard the craft – General Michael O'Toole and scientist Richard Wakefield, before the craft arrives at "the Node", a space station at which the humans undergo various tests, before being returned to Earth on a refurbished Rama with space for 2,000 humans.
