The Gateway to Hell was one of Wheatey last novels before his death and also the last to feature the Duc de Richleau his french aristocratic hero. This is a novel in the demonic possession period of Wheatley writing and has to be considered his worst of the set. The previous novels featuring the Duc in this context always have him and three (Simon, Richard and Rex) younger friends battling the forces of darkness, through his intellect and their fearlessness they always overcome the forces thrown against them.
