Advantages: Enjoyable books

Disadvantages: Nothing here to challenge you

David Gemmel is one of those authors that hits you in phases, if you know what I mean. Oh. Okay, let me explain. When you read a Gemmel book yuo really enjoy it, and go and get another to read. And so this goes on until for one reason or another the cycle is broken, and you stop. When this happens you realise that his books are a little shallow and you can't figure out why you liked them so much. But of course, if you happen to read another the cycle starts again...
His books seem to gravitate towards the 'aging hero returns from retirement to save the day' format, and this becomes a little predictable after a while. That's not to say there's anything really wrong with them, there's just nothing that's going to challenge you or make you think.
He's actually done quite a variety of fantasy novels - from novel King Arthur ones, through ancient Greece, to a generic fantasy world, and finally finishing up on a future Earth that's been decimated by a global cataclysm.
These last ones are my favourite and see John Shannow (the Jerusalem Man) dealing out Dirty Harry-style justice to religious cults.
But before you buy any, beware! Don't get sucked in!!

Why try to rationalise why you like his books so much? Just admit they are damn good and increase that measly 3 star rating!

Out of all Gemmells books (over 20+) I can only think of 2.. possibly 3 that deal with aging charatcers coming out of retirment.
