The 'medicine' has quite alarming results and Grandma ends up growing taller and taller until she is bigger than the family's house. George then tries it out on some of the farmyard animals, and the potion brings about the same results. However, the saucepan of potion won't last forever, and George didn't bother to write down exactly what he put in it so George and his father set about tryi...more

Crowned Review Dr Crippen Was Never Like This! (1110 words)

*Introduction* When you get to my age there aren’t too many things left to excite you. Maybe that’s a cynical aberration based on a gentle descent into middle-age but if there are moments that can transport one back to earlier, halcyon days of childhood and lift the veil of advancing age then I tend to grab it by the horns and love it for all its worth. Roald Dahl is an author that manages just that. Born in 1916 to Norwegian parents, Dahl was to become one of the most iconic writers of children’s stories of our time. Dahl died in 1990 after a long list of literary achievements. Renowned for books such as “James and the Giant Peach”, “Charlie and the Chocolate ...  Read the complete review

George's grandmother is a grizzly old grunion. George dreads being left alone with her when his mother goes shopping on a Saturday morning and if you knew his grandmother you really wouldn't blame him. She does nothing but criticise and get him into trouble by telling tales on him to his parents. Half the tales aren't even true. George lives miles from anywhere, on a farm, and he hasn't many other children to play with. This makes it even worse when it's Saturday morning and he's charged not only with being good but also looking after the horrid old lady who's always so nasty to him and even making sure that she gets her medicine on ...  Read the complete review

by - written on 14/10/09 (Very useful, 90 readings)
Rating:

'George's Marvellous Medicine' was the first of Roald Dahl's stories which we read to our eldest son. It's the story of a little boy who has a real stinker of a grandmother. She's rude and scary and bosses him around all the time. One day George's mum and dad have both gone out, leaving him alone with his Grandma. George has had enough of Grandma bullying him and so decides to cure her of her cantankerous behaviour with a special potion, which he'll give her instead of her usual medicine. He finds an enormous saucepan in the kitchen and lugs it all around the house, essentially putting in a bit of everything he finds [lipsticks and canary seed included!]. He ...  Read the complete review

Thinking back to when I was a child I fondly remember there was this one author who spoke to me in a totally different voice. He had a that unique ability to sprinkle magic dust over everything he produced and take you into an entirely different world where you would remain spellbound and entranced, hanging on his every syllable. That writer was Roald Dahl. George's Marvellous Medicine was published in 1981. While his mother goes shopping and his father works in the field surrounding their farmhouse, 8 year old George Kranky is saddled with the unenviable task of giving his repugnant grandma her 11 o'clock medicine. Now with reference to ...  Read the complete review
