GERRARD is the title of Liverpool and England central midfielder Stephen Gerrard's autobiography.
Gerrard writes about his childhood growing up in a deprived area of Liverpool. There is nothing in this section that is particularly interesting apart from his love for football is evident at an early age. When he is signed up by Liverpool, Gerrard writes about his joy of getting the chance to become a professional footballer. There is a heartfelt section on the Hillsborough disaster as Gerrard's cousin was killed during this disaster and he says that his cousin's memory helps drive him on.
When making his first team debut Gerrard talks about the buzz he got from walking out at Anfield for the first time. He says the ecstacy of scoring his first goal was something you can't express. Liverpool football club evidently means the world to Gerard and his passion shines through.
He explains the managers and players he likes and those he disliked. It is obvious reading this section that he is not a big fan of foreign players as these are the ones that get mentioned most. His most special relationships are with fellow scousers like Jamie Carragher. This is the most controversial section of the book as Gerrard actually gives his honest opinions.
Gerrard writes about the trophies he has won at Liverpool including the treble winning season and how captaining Liverpool is a massive honour. The champions league win against AC Milan is a good read as it details what happened that night. He explains th alure of why he nearly joined Chelsea and the reasons why en ended up staying at Liverpool. This is intriguing as it gives the reader an insight on to what a footballer has to think about before moving.
There is a chapter on England especially the world cup in 2006. While Gerrard says he loves playing for his country, I thought his passion doesn't shine through as much as when he talks about Liverpool.
The book is quite clearly written by a ghost writer so doesn't flow as well as it should. I thought alot of the book was dreary with facts rather than opinions. When Gerrard is honest it is fairly entertaining, but he held alot back. There aren't many interesting anecdotes and it lacks any humour. This book would have been better served after his career has finished.
The book contains lots of photos and is well over 200 pages.
Avaliable from AMAZON at £20 this is a book that Liverpool fans will love, but football fans in general will find ordinary.
