Advantages: TREBLE WINNING SEASON
Disadvantages: CHILDHOOD
GIGGS is the title of footballer Ryan Gigg's autobiography.
The book focuses on the life of Manchester United and Wale's left winger who is a legend in the British game winning nearly every trophy there is to win.
The book starts on his childhood and Gigg's Welsh roots that became a problem when he moved to England as he was embarased by his accent. Gigg's father surname was Wilson, but Gigg's changed his surname to his mother's when his parents split up. I find childhood stories boring and this was no exception as there's nothing exciting in this section.
Gigg's then goes on to explain his apprenticeship at Old Trafford. He had to do all the jobs modern footballers don't like clean boots and wash kits. Gigg's loved all this though because it meant he spent time with his heros. This is an interesting section with the ins and outs of been a young footballer detailed.
Gigg's talks about his start at Old Trafford and his nerves andthen instant fame at being a footballer. He was dating famous names like Danii Behr and found the attention a little hard to stomach at times. His views on footballers at te times lie Steve Bruce, paul Ince and Eric Cantona are very intriguing. I particularly found his explnation for choosing Wales over England fascinating as Gigg's represented England at schoolboy level. Although he never admits it I did feel Gigg's wishes he played for England over Wales.
The section on Manchester United's treble winning season is brilliant. His desire shines through and he speaks openly about his respect for manager Sir Alex Ferguson who has been a father figure to him. There are some good anecdotes particularlya story about Lee Sharpe and himself attending a part and Sir Alex gatecrashing and them geting the hair dryer treatment.
Overall, this is a decent book. The writing is quite good although a little boring at times. I would have liked to have read more stories about other footballers as there weren't that many. His love for football shines though and he is a dedicated professional. There are lots of photos of Gigg's during his career. Unfortunatly the book is quite dated so only goes up to 2001 so his more recent successes are not featured. Any Manchester United fan should own this while other football fans might enjoy.
