Head to the library again, you'll be glad you did.

This is Robinson's second book, and her Pulitzer prize winner.

Like her first novel, Housekeeping ( see my other review) this is a character based novel, showing Robinson's expertise in creating believable, deep characters, who hold your attention completely. There is no fast action, no big plot, but that is not to say that the book isn't jam packed full of story and movement.

Taking the form of a letter written by a dying man to his young son, we are treated to the full gamut of emotions as the narrator looks back on his life. Some stories are full of humour and warmth, others are sad and desolate, all are subtley conveyed to show us much of the man and his life as we read between the lines of writing.

This is not a happy book, it made me openly sob on the train!, but it is wonderful, and worthy of it's great accolade.

It also hints at secrets which Robinson unveils in her later book, Home, and when you have read them both there is an even greater depth of understanding.
