Glubbslyme - Jacqueline Wilson ... (including Double Act and The Suitcase Kid) is a light-hearted story of friendship and magic guaranteed to delight all imaginative 7-11 year olds. Rebecca's been rejected by her girlfriends, so when a 300-year-old magical toad offers to become her best friend things take a turn for the better. Instead of lipstick and little ponies Sarah becomes absorbed by learning to fly and casting spells on her horrid neighbour and beastly girlfriend. It all sounds great fun but having magical powers brings serious responsibilities when Glubbslyme encourages her to be as bad as her 17th-century namesake, the wicked witch, Rebecca Cockgoldde. Jacqueline Wilson's skillfull portrayal of the growing friendship between the bad tempered, pedantic, vain toad and the imaginative, lonely young girl is funny, wise and reassuring. The book is illustrated by Jane Cope with an eye-catching cover by Nick Sharratt.

Glubbslyme was one of Wilson's earliest books, & it's a real eye-opener to read something by her that predates her trademark style. It's much more long-winded than her later, sparky novels, especially Glubbslyme the toad who's pompous & extremely wordy. While there's plenty of humour in the book it's rather lost in a lot of description & the effect is much duller than you'd expect from Jacqueline Wil...more

When Rebecca's friends go off & leave her alone at the park, she finds a toad in the pond who turns out to be a talking magical toad, once the familiar of a rather unpleasant witch from some three hundred years ago. He & Rebecca adopt each other & he teaches her to make spells - including flying on an umbrella in the absence of a broomstick. She tries out an evil spell or two on people & causes havoc, but swiftly realises she's not cut out to be a wicked witch & that there are better ways of sorting out your differences.
